Rhinoplasty: An operation that will change your life

Rhinoplasty – a method of correcting and restoring the shape of the nose in order to improve its appearance, facilitate the respiratory process and for other purposes. The word has ancient Greek roots and literally means “sculpting the nose.”

In the recent years, plastic surgery is reaching a new level. One of the most popular is the plastic nose, as it is quite easy to perform and at the same time helps to significantly change the appearance.

Some real stories of our patients

In particular, the IVANCHUK Plastic Surgery Clinic offers services for rhinoplasty of different types and different levels of complexity.

Who may need a nose job?

Indications for rhinoplasty may vary by type. Cosmetic rhinoplasty includes:

  • Correction of the hump.
  • Straightening the nose.
  • Changing the shape of the nostrils.
  • Correction of the tip of the nose: its thinning or elimination of excess length.
  • Creating a face-proportional shape of the nose.

But also nose surgery may be needed with:

  • Breathing problems (most often caused by a crooked septum in the nose).
  • Snore.
  • Frequent nosebleeds.
  • Deformities of the nose (congenital and acquired).

Depending on the intended type of surgery, there will be differences in techniques and the degree of future external changes in this part of the face. The cost of rhinoplasty also depends on the needs of the patient. It is worth paying special attention to rhinoseptoplasty, which includes correction not only of the nose but also of the inner septum.

This type of operation is most often referred to as medical, as problems with the septum lead to serious complications in everyday life. Indications for this operation may be curvature of the septum, which causes migraines, nosebleeds, difficulty breathing and other complications.

What are the types of rhinoplasty?

According to the type of operation, rhinoplasty is also divided into several types. Namely – for three, as can be seen in the table:

Open rhinoplasty Closed rhinoplasty Non-surgical rhinoplasty
Used if a large amount of work awaits a plastic surgeon.

During the operation, the nose is completely “opened” by the surgeon – the upper part of the skin between the nostrils is removed and the doctor observes the internal structure of the nose with his own eyes.

It is used in cases of need for smaller-scale changes in the shape and internal structure of the nose.

The skin is carefully separated from the cartilage inside the body and the surgeon can remove the excess, or insert implants to change the shape of the nose.

The least traumatic type of nasal surgery is non-surgical rhinoplasty.

This method uses special fillers and injections to correct the shape of the nose. However, the effect is not permanent – such a procedure will have to be repeated at regular intervals.

Male rhinoplasty

It is incorrect to assume that the correction of the shape of the nose is an exclusively “female” operation. Male rhinoplasty is no less popular than female.

Male rhinoplasty is often needed by athletes in such sports as boxing, kickboxing, Greco-Roman wrestling, as well as representatives of other schools of martial arts.

Rhinoplasty in men can affect both the plastic of the tip of the nose and full-fledged reconstructive rhinoplasty, which is necessary for serious injuries of this organ.

IVANCHUK Plastic Surgery Clinic undertakes operations on men’s noses in the same way as operations on women’s noses. The main thing for this clinic is to help the client, regardless of his gender.

What is re-rhinoplasty?

Secondary rhinoplasty is a special type of rhinoplasty designed to correct the mistakes of the first failed operation. The need for it may arise in the following cases:

  • The surgeon made a mistake during the first operation.
  • Serious injuries of the nose after rhinoplasty.
  • Feeling unwell due to a change in the natural shape of the nose (for example, incorrectly placed nasal septum).
  • As well as other indications for this operation.

For example, you can often find treatment for secondary rhinoplasty of the tip of the nose. This area is quite delicate, the surgeon can easily overdo it by changing its shape during the first operation, and as a result the patient will be dissatisfied. In such cases, re-operation will save.

However, not everyone can perform this surgery: there are defects that cannot be corrected, as well as expectations that cannot be fulfilled. The doctor should give the patient a realistic picture of what he can and cannot do without harming human health.

Are there any contraindications to nose plastic surgery?

Nose correction is of interest to many people, but not everyone can have surgery. There is a number of limitations that should not be ignored if you do not want to face serious health problems.

These include the following contraindications:

  • Too young. Rhinoplasty, including nose reduction, should not be done by people under the age of 18, as the nasal tissues are still in the process of forming, and surgery can severely damage them.
  • Diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, acute forms of chronic diseases of the internal organs. In this case, nasal surgery can end in a very strong shock to the body, and in the case of, for example, diabetes, there is a risk of inability to fully heal wounds after surgery.
  • Serious skin problems – such as acne. The inflammatory process can lead to germs entering the blood during rhinoplasty and blood infections.

In addition, before changing the shape of the nose, you should visit a psychologist to determine whether the cause of this desire is a real problem, or the fault of the complexes. For example, often girls want to do a rhinoplasty of the hump of the nose or make a plastic columella, but in fact the defects are almost absent and invisible to others, while the girl is very complex about it.

How is the operation performed?

This question is of interest to those who are serious about going to reduce the nose or change its shape.

First of all, the patient of a plastic surgeon will have to undergo a series of examinations. It will include a complete urine and blood test, a biochemical blood test, a test for prothrombin, HIV and hepatitis, as well as sinus tomography and electrocardiography.

The patient will have to undergo a general examination by a physician, who if necessary can send the person for additional examinations.

The operation itself, depending on the type – laser rhinoplasty, non-surgical nose reduction or other techniques – can take from half an hour to more than two hours. The time of the operation also depends on the complexity of the task set before the surgeon and the patient’s initial data. Even correcting a bump on the nose can take a different amount of time – bumps can be different sizes and shapes.

Rehabilitation after reduction of nasal wings and other types of rhinoplasty is divided into several stages.

The first stage. During the first week, the patient should wear a plaster bandage on the nose. At this time, the nose and the area around it are very swollen, there may be difficulty in breathing, as well as bruising under the eyes.

The second stage. Removal of the bandage, return to normal life, care of edema. It may take about a month, and all this time you should avoid loads and blows to the face – it can nullify the results of rhinoplasty of the tip of the nose and other parts of the body.

The third stage. Restoration of internal tissues, which can take about a year.

It should also be noted that the first month or two you can sleep only on your back, so surgical clinics often advise patients to buy a special pillow on which you can sleep after reducing the tip of the nose.
